Hass Avocado 101

It’s a little known fact . . .

WHOLLY GUACAMOLE® products uses only Hass avocado. The next time you’re enjoying a big tasty bowl of WHOLLY GUACAMOLE®  dip, whip out some of these fun and interesting factoids to surprise and impress your friends and family!

Back in the Day

The avocado tree is a flowering plant. The avocado, is a berry fruit with one large seed in the center. Hass avocado trees descended from a single "mother tree" which was derived from unknown subspecies of avocado trees. Sadly, the "mother tree" died of root rot and was cut down in September, 2002. Native to Mexico, the avocado can be traced back to 10,000 BC and known to be part of the Aztec culture.

When Good Guac Goes Brown

Even the best guacamole has a tendency to lose its green.
It’s not the avocado’s fault. It’s just made that way!

You see, avocados contain enzymes that are way sensitive to oxygen. So when it’s sitting out on your counter, it oxidizes and begins to turn brown. In this situation, it’s still safe to eat. It’s just not quite as appetizing to look at.

sideImages-avo1Because WHOLLY GUACAMOLE products contains no preservatives, our guacamole is going to react the same way. But there are a few ways to help with the process:
1. Keep WHOLLY GUACAMOLE products in its sealed package until you are ready to serve or eat.
2. Add lemon or lime juice to help prevent browning. (They also add great flavor as a bonus!)
3. The best way to store left-overs (if you have any) is to use plastic wrap and press it all the way down to the guacamole to eliminate as much air as possible. Put the wrapped container or platter in a larger bag you can seal.

If browning does occur, it’s still ok to eat but you can scrape off the top layer and get down to the greener pasture. Or you can simply give it a good stir. Once the WHOLLY GUACAMOLE package is opened store refrigerated and eat within 1-3 days.

The Avocado is a Rock Star Fruit!
